welcome us as silly unending children
be not chagrined when you see yourself
reflected in our smiles
and hear yourself in whispers behind cupped hands
take joy in us as we laugh and frolic
in the jungle gym playgrounds you called obstacles
we will climb, even without arms
hanging by the skin of our teeth
we will run, even without legs
waddling on hip stumps for we are unstoppable
we will tirelessly drag bricks and boards for our fort
because we know that the word fort
is short for fortress
and our imagination
is our protection and our strength

it is a phoenix rising

our wings are made of flame!
